After Water Firms Retreat, PRRD Urged To Pursue Criminal Case Behind Onerous Deals

Netizens rejoice but others are not when they heard the news that Manila Water and Maynilad will no longer implement the approved arbitration ruling obliging the government or the Filipino taxpayers to pay them.

In a House hearing on Tuesday, December 10, Manila Water President Rene Almendras and Maynilad President Ramoncito Fernandez said the two water firms will no longer pursue the PHP 7.4 billion and PHP 3.4 billion indemnifications that the Singapore Permanent Court of Arbitration granted last November.

In other words, the government just saved PHP 11 billion after the two water firms retreat when the President declared war against them.

Earlier, President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to jail and sue the persons behind the alleged irregular government contracts with the two water companies for economic sabotage.
“I will feel the pulse of the people. If they say, ‘Mayor, go after them,’ then I’ll file an economic sabotage case. My case is airtight. If you evaluate the [expletive] contract with the anti-graft law, it is a mirror of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Law,” the President said.
In addition, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the government will take legal action if the two water concessionaires refuse to remove the alleged onerous provisions in the agreements.
