Animal Rescuers Calls For Help After Getting Trapped Saving Abandoned Animals In Taal

Three members of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia were trapped in Taal Island after trying to rescue abandoned animals there on Wednesday, January 15.

Manila Bulletin reported that in an interview with DZMM, Anna Cabrera, executive director of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) said that the three members were left behind in the Island.

“Yung tatlong tao po nang isang organization they are there, na- trap po sa Taal Island mismo. I think they were trying to rescue the animals pero naiwan po sila kung sino man po ‘yung nagdala sa kanila doon,” Cabrera said.

She asked the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to help them rescue the three animal rescuers stranded on the Island.

“Ngayon lang po sila tumawag sa akin. Kaninang umaga lang sila nagpunta, tinawagan ako kasi iniwan sila po nung nagdala sa kanila doon. Kinuha po yung mga baka, iniwan po yata sila,” she said.

On Monday, PETA Asia sent their animal rescue team to the evacuation centers to give aide to the evacuated animals.

Hundreds of animals were found abandoned in compounds and cages by their owners who fled their homes due to Taal Volcano’s eruption, according to PETA Asia which conducted rescue operations.

“Our rescue team has come across hundreds, if not thousands, of animals in the evacuation zone, the majority of whom are locked inside gated compounds,” PETA Asia’s special projects coordinator Nirali Shah said on Tuesday.

“In order to help the most animals as quickly as possible, we’ve been dropping food and freshwater through the gates to them,” Shah added.

PETA Asia said around 500 kilograms of food will be given to the animals in the eruption-affected areas in Batangas.

“We’re doing everything we can to get onto Taal Island as well as feeding and giving water to animals in the evacuation zone whose caretakers have fled the area,” PETA said on its website.

PETA Asia is hopeful that the animals’ guardians will come back for them in a day or two, Shah said.

PHIVOLCS has raised Alert Level 4 over the Taal Volcano after a phreatic eruption took place at the crater on Sunday.

The province of Batangas was placed under a state of calamity on Monday.
